Where to Discover Turtles

Well, where do you start if you want to discover Turtles?  For us it was Deepwater National Park, just south of Agnes Waters, Queensland, Australia.

While Mon Repo is a 'tourist' area to view turtles, being just north of Bundaberg, for us, it's about being remote, away from the usual 'tourists'.  Deepwater National Park affords just that.  Being accessible via the usual flooded Deepwater Creek (at this time of monsoonal year) while the National Parks office advises access from the south (via Bundaberg 90min away) is accessible by 2WD, it is a rough road in.  While access from the North (Agnes Waters 30 mins) is definitely 4X4.  So, we're happy this access keeps the crowds away.

Deepwater National Park hosts 2 camp grounds, Wreck Rock and Middle Rock.  Wreck Rock hosts 14 camp sites, however, Nev and Bev, the Turtle Researchers, establish a base camp on sites 12-14 each year.  They have radio contact with the National Parks office and provide 'Camp Hosts' which means they are both a font of knowledge and keep the pit toilets clean and top up the bore water.  They are a wonderful couple who have been doing this research at this site for the past 30 years, so, they answered all of our questions :)

There is access to bore water and tank water taps and a bore water cold shower at the toilets, and a bore water tap at site 6.

Some of the sites are shaded, some more than others, while other sites are quite open and no mid-day shade.  There are two 'drive thru' sites, some of the others are only suitable for tents, while others accommodate larger camper trailers comfortably.  There is easy access to the pristine beach.  There is a wonderful swimming spot which is an area between the small headland rock form and another rock form to the north of the small headland.  NOTE:  This is an un-patrolled beach, so swimmers swim at their own risk.

Middle Rock campground has no facilities, meaning no toilet, no water, sites range in size.

Deepwater Creek mouth is about 15 kilometers to the south.  From there all the way up past middle rock to Flat Rock ( a day use area) is the breading ground for Green, Loggerhead and Leatherback as well as the Olive Ridley, Flatback and Hawksbill Turtles.

Here's some photo's of our campsite and the Wreck Rock beach area, enjoy..
